Personal and family papers of Handley and his relatives, and papers relating to Handley's historical research. Family papers include several volumes of diaries kept by Richard Handley, 1864-1898, and one volume apparently kept by Handley's mother, Mary, 1867-1869; correspondence of the Handley and related Pope, Spears, and Hockman families, particularly letters of Ann Hockman of Commack and William and Eliza Hockman; plans for the Handley house, 1883; bills, receipts, and papers on business and legal matters of Robert Handley and Mary Handley, 1850s-1860s; and a photograph album, ca. 1920. Also, papers, 1786-1792, of George Handley of Georgia, including bail bonds signed by George Handley as sheriff of Richmond County, Georgia, and a grant of land to Charnal Wallace with a survey and manuscript map. Papers on historical topics include correspondence of Richard H. Handley with Orville B. Ackerly, William Wallace Tooker, William S. Pelletreau, and others; pamphlets, book catalogs, and bookplates, 1850s-1900; cemetery transcriptions from various locations on Long Island; and letters regarding the Handley collection to Cornelia H. Peek, librarian of the Long Island History Room, Smithtown Library.
